Shawn Mendes is spending the entire week hanging out on the set of The Late Late Show With James Corden, which means we’re finally getting the long-awaited debut of the pairs’ first Carpool Karaoke segment. In addition to performing and shooting a few skits with Corden, the two also spent the day driving around L.A., where they sang tracks like “In My Blood,” “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back,” and “Lost In Japan,” while discussing the finer things in life. Like Bieber’s briefs.
Chatting about music and life, Mendes, who recently moved into his own place in Toronto, admitted that he still has many of the comforts of his parents’ home in his new place, including his mom visiting to cook and do his laundry. Corden suggested that Mendes simply employ the Justin Bieber method, which includes wearing underwear once and then throwing it out. Mendes revealed that he would spend upwards of $500 for a pair of Bieber’s briefs, and spend zero dollars acquiring a pair of underwear worn by Corden. Harsh, but fair.
The two also discussed Mendes love of Harry Potter, with Mendes rating himself a 9.5 on the superfan scale out of 10, revealing that he has a book at home that he uses to keep track of all the spells mentioned in the Harry Potter series. Hm. Maybe that’s where some of his talent comes from. He also admitted that one of the most star struck moments of his life included meeting Hermione Granger herself, Emma Watson, a reaction we can definitely understand.
The pair also tested out Shawn Mendes Canadianess, which predictably included Mendes being too polite to have road rage and then taking Corden to play hockey (that’s ice hockey) for the first time. Mendes passed the Canadian pop star test of being able to skate, so it looks like we can continue keeping him at the top of the charts.
Following in the footsteps of Harry Styles, who has also spent a week on The Late Late Show With James Corden, Mendes is the perfect addition to the late night set, where he can hang out with Corden and show off his impressive comedic timing. Like here.
The week-long residency will also include nightly musical performances, with Mendes kicking off Monday’s show with his song “Nervous” from his recently released self-titled third album.
