Staying true to Harry Potter fashion, the second instalment of Fantastic Beasts has been officially titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
In a new still exclusively released by Entertainment Weekly, fans are treated to a younger version of Newt (Joshua Shea) at Hogwarts and the youngest version of Dumbledore (Jude Law) that we’ve ever seen.
From what we already know, Newt first attended Hogwarts in 1908, where he was later expelled for––you guessed it––a situation involving fantastical beasts (much to professor Dumbledore’s dismay). “Kicked out of Hogwarts for endangering human life,” Percival Graves (Colin Farrell) described in the first instalment of Fantastic Beasts.
Along with the photo comes some new details on what we should expect to learn in the upcoming film regarding Newt’s past relationship with pure-blood witch, Leta Lestrange (Zoë Kravitz), a character with in-law family ties to Harry Potter’s Bellatrix Lestrange. Lestrange, as it turns out, may have even played a hand in the events that lead to Newt’s expulsion. In an Entertainment Weekly interview, Eddie Redmayne alluded to Newt and Leta’s mysterious relationship.
“Leta, it’s one of those relationships where there was definitely great love there,” said Redmayne. “But was it ever a full-blown relationship? I don’t know. But certainly, she’s somebody who has touched him hugely. At the beginning of this film you realize she’s now in a relationship with Newt’s brother so, of course, that comes with great complications.”

Someone you love entering a relationship with your brother? We’d say “great complications” is a supreme understatement. According to EW, the new film will introduce us to Newt’s older Auror brother, Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner) and his (girlfriend? Fiance? Wife? Lady-friend?) Leta. Our hearts feel for Newt already.
Though we have no other inclination as to why Newt’s brother and Leta will be a part of this film’s storyline, we do foresee a lot of tension. Why did Leta choose the wrong brother? And what is Newt and his brother’s relationship like now? If Theseus is a highly-respected Auror (magical detective), what’s Leta’s profession? According to the Harry Potter books, the Lestrange family has a long history of falling in line with dark wizards. How does a relationship like that work?
In regards to the plotline, all we know for certain is that Fantastic Beasts 2 will follow Newt and Dumbledore in Paris as they track down villainous wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). Newt’s love interest from the first film, Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), her sister Queenie (Alison Sudol), and Queenie’s muggle boyfriend Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) will also appear in the upcoming movie.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald opens in theatres November 16. Start brushing up on your Harry Potter world history!
